A panel price is not an installed fence price
On 8 October 2026, Jacksons Fencing listed product 636100, a 1.05 m-high by 1.83 m-wide featherboard panel, at £50.64 including VAT (£42.20 excluding VAT). This is one specified low-height product, not an average privacy-fence price. Check the current listing and delivery charge before ordering.

Measure the run and confirm the effective bay width
Draw each straight section separately and mark corners, gates and any posts you intend to retain. Confirm the boundary position independently; this calculator cannot establish ownership or permission.
The panel width printed in a catalogue may differ from the complete post-to-post spacing. Ask the supplier which effective width to enter. Use the required finish height as well as the length: a low panel and a tall privacy panel are different specifications.
Worked quantity example for a 12 m run
If the confirmed effective bay width is 1.83 m, 12 ÷ 1.83 gives about 6.56 bays. Round up to seven. One independent straight run using all new posts then needs eight posts in the simple calculator model. The last bay requires a suitable design adjustment; this arithmetic does not establish that a particular panel can safely be cut.
Seven of the specified £50.64 panels would cost £354.48 including VAT for panels alone, using the observed price. That excludes posts, bases, fixings, delivery, removal and labour. Confirm product compatibility and quantities with the installer before purchase.

Request a complete bill of quantities
Keep the material specification beside the quantity so that a change of post type or height is visible in the comparison.
| Item | Quantity or detail to request |
|---|---|
| Panels or boards | Style, dimensions, finish and number |
| Posts | Height, material, end/corner/gate positions |
| Ground fixings | Method, concrete or specified fixing system |
| Accessories | Gravel boards, brackets, caps and gate fittings |
| Work and waste | Removal, vegetation clearance, installation and disposal |
| Delivery and VAT | Postcode delivery, unloading and tax basis |
Corners, gates and slopes change the count
A shared corner can change the number of posts compared with treating every run as independent. Gate openings need their own specified posts and fittings. Sloping ground may change the arrangement and the finished gaps. Ask the installer to mark these adjustments on the drawing.
Our calculator is useful for a simple first budget. It does not design foundations or determine wind loading. Check site-specific installation requirements with the supplier or a suitable installer.
Avoid double counting and false regional precision
Use either VAT-inclusive prices with 0% additional VAT, or a consistent ex-VAT basis with the applicable tax added once. If a contractor quotes a full installed price, do not add its included labour again.
We have not established a representative UK installation rate or regional adjustment. Obtain comparable local quotations. A supply-only product example supports a specific material cost, not a claim about complete fencing costs across the country.
Common questions
Why do I need one more post than bays?
An independent straight run needs a post at each end and between adjacent bays. Shared corners, existing posts and gates require a separate check.
Can I use the example price for a six-foot fence?
No. The cited product is 1.05 m high. Choose and price the exact product and height required.
Does the result include old fence removal?
Only if you enter that cost in the relevant allowance. Ask the contractor to state what removal and disposal cover.
